Motherly care for your health GREMALTES (Greater Madras Leprosy Treatment and Health Education Scheme) was set up in April 1971 in partnership with the Government with the objective of creating leprosy awareness in the community, early diagnosis, appropriate treatment and care and rehabilitation assistance for the needy patients. GREMALTES was registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act in the year 1978.
GREMALTES started by Mr. William Gershon and later joined by his wife Sybille Gershon with support of German Leprosy Relief Association headed by late Mr. Hermann Kober. In 1980, the need for a well-equipped hospital was experienced to tackle complications assisting out of the disease through physio care, re constructive surgery, lab investigations hospitalized care for needy leprosy patients. Thus came 100 bedded GREMALTES hospital with all the necessary facilities with the team of qualified and committed personnel.
To be an Integrated Health Care Facility focused on persons affected by stigmatized diseases and a partner in the inclusive development of the disadvantaged people in the community.
OUR ACHIEVEMENTS
GREMALTES covered entire North Chennai population wherein 78000 Leprosy affectedcases detected, treated and cured. When prevalence of leprosy drastically reduced, GREMALTES began to diversify to other areas of public health such as Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, Dermatology, Ophthalmology and other health issues that affects the people, without losing focus on care for leprosy affected persons.
GREMALTES has been involving in Revised National Tuberculosis Control programme since inception, and has been assigned a microscopy cum treatment centre and area allotted was 9 corporation divisions of Zone VIII with a population of nearly 300,000. Nearly 4500 TB affected persons were detected, treated and cured.
GREMALTES established community-based rehabilitation groups for leprosy affected and orthopedically disabled persons. Over 100 people are benefited through medicaland socio-economic support through this group,
GREMALTES has risen to the need of the community from time to time, medical social and economic needs in the time of disasters such as flood, Tsunami, heavy rains, etc.β¦ targeting the elderly people and the children through various support received from partners.
To generate awareness in the community regarding leprosy and other stigmatized diseases and promote sound health care practices To provide quality care to persons affected by Leprosy,Β and ailments in Eye, Dermatology, Orthopaedics, Dentistry, Diabetes, Hypertension, General Health, Sexuality Transmitted Infections, Paediatrics. To involve in feasible areas of community relief, rehabilitation and development activities networking with relevant stake holders.

Gremaltes Hospital provides very good care for leprosy patients. Treatment is available free of cost, which is very helpful for poor patients. Charges for other treatments are also affordable compared to private hospitals. Doctors and staff are supportive.
